Got a Noisy Exhaust? Don't Put Off Getting It Fixed
March 17th, 2017
Your exhaust system is responsible for much more than just keeping your vehicle quiet. For starters, It carries toxic exhaust gasses behind and away from the vehicle so that they can’t come in through the vehicle’s windows and ventilation system.
What happens when your exhaust system is not working correctly?
--A failed muffler can be enough to trigger a trouble code in the engine’s computer, illuminating the Check Engine light on the dashboard and hurting fuel economy and performance.
--A faulty exhaust system can cause your vehicle to not pass an emissions test and inspection.
--The engine is engineered for a specific amount of back pressure, which is the resistance to exhaust flow through the system. A failed muffler and decreased back pressure means you can end up with a burned exhaust valve or other problems.
Since the 70s, catalytic converters have been built into the exhaust system of every vehicle. The catalytic converter looks like a muffler, but it’s designed to basically incinerate toxins before they can make it out the tailpipe. The catalytic converter usually lasts the life of the vehicle, but when they fail they can be enough to cause rough running conditions or even prevent the vehicle from starting and running.
Is your vehicle’s exhaust noisier than it used to be? Maybe you’re noticing a vibration that can be felt through the seat back or floor, maybe only while idling with the transmission in gear? Vibration can come from loose or broken exhaust pipe hangers or other pieces of hardware in the system.
